Dams and Irrigation Systems
Bendungan is the Indonesian word for dam of weir. Indonesia’s vast archipelago is shaped by thousands of rivers, making dams and weirs essential to the country’s water management and development strategy.
Indonesia has nearly 300 officially recorded dams, with many more planned or under construction to support agriculture, reduce flood risks, and secure clean water for growing cities. These structures play a crucial role in irrigation, hydropower generation, and maintaining water supply across diverse regions, from Java and Sumatra to Sulawesi and Nusa Tenggara.
Beyond their practical function, several major dams such as Jatiluhur, Cirata, and Saguling have become landmarks in their own right, contributing to local tourism and regional economic growth.
